Hi Mario,
Yep should be a good machine. Get seller to send photos of the heads.

Hi Mario,

Yes looks like the Mk 1 version. No tape head cover - mising (available from Germany). Many claim these to be serviced but realy true, factor in a 250 dollar service and at worst a relapping of heads, new brake bands and a recap. There is a bloke in Oz now advertising on ebay a complete cap kit for around 70 bucks. If the motor bearings are nacked then more work is required. I have a Mk 3 PR99 and they are OK machines.

What about this one in Brisbane, looks like gamve's model:

Hey V, do you have a service manual for your Mk3? Easy enough to follow?
I'm gunna pull the trigger on that PR99 I think.

That looks nice!
These things look so cool I'm finding them them a very attractive piece of kit...... as candy eye :-[
Edit:Just what types of music can be had for playback, and is it very prohibitive dollar wise?
-
Hey data, join the party!
It's not only the look, they sound bloody good too and I have to say I like them better than TT. ;D

I even like cassette when done right, so I'd be a sucker for the sound of real tape with close to original material 8)

An external valve output stage and you are there.

You got a great buy there Steve - and at a great price.
It's hard to tell from the (ebay) pics, but looks like the heads are in v g condition.
Should give many years of service.
Now - you just have to get it here :)

Site down for maintainence? Not been accessible for a couple of days.
Happy new year to all our readers and contributors.
Well finally got my FC drivers back home. ;D
3 are good one has a rubbing coil, damn. :(
So import duty payable to customs and excise, :-X landing and handling fee plus import company fee's all paid :( and it took 2 days plus 2 trips to the airport to 4 different departments in seperate buildings due to the import compay doing an early runner. :o Luckily I convinced Cutoms that being mostly steel no visit to AQIS was needed or no doubt that would have been more robbing fee's required. In hindsight it would have been easier to pay the additional freight fee's to have this all resolved and delivered to my home as it cost me almost a whole day of my life plus all the robbers along the way. 140 bucks for paperwork plus import duty, ho hum. :P

I have been through the customs game, wasted two days of my time just for a 1930 Altec 515, 15 cell horn and 288 compression driver. Don't start me on customs. Just idiots, or is it us who are the idiots for putting up with this game they play. I gave up and employed a broker to get it.

Yeah door-to-(air)port shipping is a bit of a false economy, often much easier and cheaper to just pay the extra for door-to-door and not have the hassle! Bummer about the VCs

Congrats Steven, can't wait to hear the Yarlung tapes played back on the Studer on your system !

This type of candy pops up on a regular basis on ebay. Shill bidding usually ensures the prices end up insane and the seller usually
does not get paid. The result is Hi Ho Presto, the same item tuns up for sale again on ebay a week later.
These really are stunning machines but apparently the sound quality is no better than the earlier units. The biggie is that if they
go wrong...who is gunna fix it. These things are chock a bloc with computer chips.

Consensus varies, many prefer the earlier machines. I would imagine the extensive digital control
may have something to do with it due to low level PS corruption.

Check this beast out - 2" tape / 24 track. This may well be coming up as a restoration project - it's a big job.
Gamve - since you are the tape guru, can you identify this machine.

OK....I will have a guess, let me see, thinking thinking. OK i have a vision, that is the machine used by INXS and it toured the world with them. Is it Ampex ?

You'd better get glasses - this is a 24 track 2 inch machine. Does it look like an Ampex?
Although I believe the heads are Ampex by the look of it.
It does have some historic significance.

I'm no guru. Not versed on the multitrack machines. My guess on this is it is a Stephens multitrack?
Does not appear to have pinch rollers or capstan shafts. John Stephens was apparently a genius when it came to tape tension servo control

It does have a pinch roller on the capstan. It's actually an Australian made tape machine called an Optronix (Optro), I think the only multi track tape
machine ever made here. It's been sitting around for years but needs quite a bit of work. The mechanics are I believe very robust but electronics are
unknown. Restored to full working condition with upgraded electronics it would be a very good machine.
WRT pinch rollerless machines I think there were ATR-100/102 (1/4" 1/2") and ATR-124 24/16 track Ampex and the Stephens.
It seems there were very few Stephens machines made but people who have had them swear they are really great sounding, maybe
even the best.
-
I'm telling porkies again :) Another pinch roller-less machine is Otari MTR90 - damn nice looking unit.

Yeah, that MTR90 sure is sexy.
I wonder if splicing 2" tape is easier than splicing 1/4" , I hate being a perfectionist, and trying to get the splice perfect.

Optical illusion - the section behind reels to support old meter bridge is unchanged.
ATR-100 with MR70 electronics (tube). Given the one off nature and all the customization work in marrying the two,
the price is not too far off the mark given PMW want to make -some- money from the job.

Guys you need to look a bit closer at the pictures. The heads are marginal and the lifters and guides are well
worn. This $500 machine could turn out to be a rough $1500 machine by the time you get it sounding good.
The guy that has it does not have a clue. The flux is set to high when it is configured for 456 (medium tape).
If it looks like a dog and smells like a dog it probably is a .....

In good nick a MTR10 is easily worth more than $2K, IMO.
There is no shortage of spare parts available 2nd hand from the US, and we have locals here who can help service and calibrate them.
I wouldnt hesitate, they dont come up very often.

The otari A810 went for much more than I thought. I rather buy a studer A80rc than get this machine.

Please be aware, even though this machine appears to be a stereo machine, this could well be an instrumentation recorder not suited for use with audio signals.
Come to think of it what would the military want with a high quality audio recorder suited to music? A quick look shows there is bugger all info on the web on this
machine so I would be very careful thinking this could be a good machine for music reproduction.
-
From the net it seems that Gamve is right and it is an instrumentation recorder made for the US navy around 1950. Multiple channels with maybe 1 audio channel.
Here is a link to a history of Ampex that refers to it. http://ammpt.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/The-Early-Days-of-Ampex-Corporation.pdf

Yep nice tube tape stage from an Ampex 300 350 series R2R. Yes you will need a pair and matching impedance heads for it to be
any good to you. These usually go for good money as the also make good microphone pre amps.
-
Now that i have a A80 Studer i will probably sell the Otari MTR10, perfect machine, the best Otrari 10 i have owned and as new inside, low low miles, perfect sounding, imaging is spot on. PM if interested.
-
congratulations on your A80... any pixes or videos on how it sounds ?
-
The early Studer A80 VU is so lush and warm with a big sound stage, surprisingly it has really good detail. But that does not mean much to me. What matters is the way it plays music, it has a really relaxed natural analogue rightness and so importantly has excellent timbre. The musical weight is centered right where it needs to be, with lovely weight in the lower midrange That where magic happens. It really is in the lush romantic school. My recording engineer friend who owns every Studer made said the early A80VU Studers where built and tuned from the factory to sound like the slightly earlier valve models like the famous all valve Studer J37 used for the Beatles recordings, and yes he owns one of these too, rebuilt by the famous Tim de Paravicini.
-
Interestingly the Otari MTR 10 is a completely different sounding beast, you could say it's a modern sound, more in your face, here i am, precise, well focused, almost Quality CD like precision, just a little more artificial and centered in the upper midrange you could say. But yes it really is a ying and yang thing, what it really comes down to is do i like the older 1950/60 sound or the way the modern music systems sound today. I guess another way to look at it is do i like the older original recordings from the 1950 /60 or the modern pressings. Well let's guess.
-
My guess is...
You read what you posted about the Studer & are now trying to regain the lost value on the Otari...
-
Interestingly the Otari MTR10 still sounds amazing, My friend recently had a listen to both the studer A80 and Otari MTR10 and felt the Otari MTR10 running direct into the valve output stage sounded better than the studer run though its standard transistor output, but on equal terms will that change.
