Permalloy Output Transformer

Permalloy is an alloy of nickel (40% to 80%) and iron that has an exceptionally high magnetic permeability
(B/H). High permeability transformer cores are more sensitive and responsive to low-level audio signals.

Permalloy is more expensive than more commonly used materials, but must be used if the highest quality output transformer is required. Permalloy output transformers typically have better transient response, greater information retrieval and are generally more vivid in their presentation of music." - quote from amplifier designer Herbert Reichert

The material are source from Korea typically 66mm EI laminations. For line/ power output transformer , The 48% Nickel base material are use.

For signal to signal transfer, 78% Nickel EI 48mm lamination are use.

Quite well priced and possibly provide better sound over chinese made output transformers (ie. James brand) ?

Looking for a pair of 3.5K SE opt  as part of my Audionote 300B SET KIT amp rebuild :)

Any thoughts on permalloy output transformers?

Permalloy = added Nickel, not sure how much in their case.

For low level transformers such as microphone IP and line OP generally up to 80% Nickel is added.
The result is lower low frequency distortion and a cleaner overall presentation.

This may or may not be to your liking, for example many vintage 'clone' transformers such as Neve (mixing desks)
output transformers are preferred in all iron as it adds to the authentic vintage sound.

So in a nutshell it will be subjective.

cheers

Thank you Terry.

I will certainly consider a pair of these OPT when time comes.

Thank you Terry.

I will certainly consider a pair of these OPT when time comes.

This subject spurred my interest, I knew someone else was making Permalloy OP's, search turned up Magnaquest's Peerless S240A.
Here's some good info which might help with the decision:

Interesting, turns out the Permalloy traffo actually sounded richer than the M6.
This goes a little against what happens in line level traffo's, generally Hi Nickel are more transparent.

Sounds like you better try them and let us know!  :D :D

cheers
