Title: Interconnects for different types of music
Post by: qwerter on December 10, 2010, 11:06:37 PM
I have tried several types of interconnects (including DIY's) and found that the most difficult task is to reproduce orchestral and piano classical music ( I guess because of the tremendous amount of harmonics and frequency "spillage". Some wire is great with jazz, but not with orchestral. 1mm solid core is better with orchestral music, but sounds less detailed and almost "rude" with jazz. Any recommendations?

try multi strand wire eg: speaker cables from old cars dark copper multistrand wire and the strands are thicker to what they make now.it was made in early 80's and 90's.

but another amp will change your sound so what works now will be a different story later(could be better or worse and also just different)

I guess it all comes down to experimenting... But this is what makes our hobby fun!

Will using thinner solid core make a difference?

yes it will thinner solid core less body in sound multistrand ads air and lightness(depending on the copper as well)

It's interesting isnt it.  A couple of months ago Steven was demoing different tda1541a dac chips on his system.  Each one he used had a slightly different character.  Different chips suited different types of music.  It was a real ear opener.

I find additional details suit classical,  and a little more liquidity is nice with jazz.   Maybe it's a taste thing?   But yeah, experimenting with different cables is fun.   I must get back to making some more.

Yes you can always spot the audioholics amonst us, they are the ones with storage bins full of cables that are not current flovour of the month.  :o

Whilst you can make subtle changes to the overall 'sound' of a system you cannot alter the basic character overly but only tame it some what.  What others have siad is along similar lines to my train of thought.  Thin single core cables can clean up a messy sounding (e.g. too dense, muffled top end)  Thicker quality single core can restore balance.  Multi strand can bring greater body and weight but usually not additional clarity.  Materials make a difference too, linear crystal copper is best for cold / hard sounding system  (transistor)  Silver brings a brighter sound and more detail where required. Carbon stranded (high resistance) can settle an overly energetic system (Van der hul ultimates) and bring through additional detail without the additional brightness of silver.

Hope this has given you some thing useful to experiment with. :)
