Title: Flemos, first DAC - EVER
Post by: ozmillsy on September 02, 2010, 12:01:45 PM
Quote from: flemo
I decided if I heard a DAC which sounded better than my LP12 then I would buy it, then I found one.

I was fortunate enough not to have a waste a lot of money on DAC's and transports as I have only ever purchased one DAC and one transport.  The Killer DAC is my first purchase into the CD format for over 20 years, and my DIY modified Marantz CD50 transport is my first dedicated transport.

Attached is some pic's of how it came when I purchased it, and then how it looks in a temporary case until I build the my desired Killer DAC case.  I hope the pic's work??

I have since put a lid on the case, which I hate the way it turned out, but will post pic's later if these work!!

Pete,

I am very impressed, specially since this is only a temporary case.

Can't wait to see your plans for the final case.

Cheers fella's, here's the pic's with the lid on, which I hate! It's almost impossible to buy any decent looking vents!

I'll paint the vents black which I think may improve its looks.

For some reason the lid looks better in the pic's!

I reckon it looks sensational.   At first I thought the aluminium grills would be better painted black.   But the more I look at the pics,   the more I like it the way it is.

Were all the additional electronic bits sourced locally?   Switches, plugs, connectors, etc?

Quote from: flemo
Hi Andrew, yes the switches are from Altronics and all the other bits came with the dac.

I need to upgrade the female RCA's to Eichmanns and just ordered some Obbligato foil caps to replace the 2.2uF Auriecaps on the valve output stage.  At $35.00 it's a no brainer as the Duelands are over $400.00 and really I'm chasing more topend resolution at the moment.

Cheers, flemo.

Thanks fella's, already looking at building another case soon. I have some other bits in the shed I'm keen to use.

Cheers Dan, yes it's sounding pretty awesome at the moment.  Quite scary when I consider my dac is basically stock (AKA the poverty pack!) and has soooo much potential should I choose to start upgrading some of the internal components.   ;)

You've got fantastic woodworking skill Flemo... This is definitely a killer case for the KillerDAC! Well done!

I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing flemo's dac the other day.  If you think it looks impressive, all I can say is it sounds a whole lot better than it looks.  Yes I am very impressed.

Hehe....I'm very familiar with the sound and yes I love it, haven't heard anything which even remotely close! I just thought the KillerDAC deserved a killer case and flemo's case is just brilliant  :)

Poor wording on my part.  I was aware that you had a KillerDac.  My comments were intended to impart to those that have not had the benefit of hearing one,  that not only does flemo's look magnificent, it (they) sound even better.

Whilst I don't own one, I have heard two of them, and they are in the two best systems that I have heard.  I think that when I get to hear Tuyen's it will be a case of the three best systems I have heard will all have had KD's.

Better be quick to get one mcb, the KillerDAC just won a shootout and I think Steven will have too many people wanting the DAC.

Happy listening,
William

Well my DAC is done in term of prototypes, case design has to be translated from pen/paper into CAD. But I don't have all the funding to go ahead with production yet, need a bit more time I suppose. Have to get 100 produced, so it's a large number of DACs too.

And I wouldn't mind getting a KillerDAC with that case :)

I must admit I have been very surprised at the positive reaction to my dac case.  ;D

I guess it was lucky for me it was all offcuts in the shed and the only things I had to buy were the air vents and switches.

I'm currently playing around with a jarrah dac case at the moment, hoping I'll have enough offcuts in the shed to finish it.
