Title: Steam Punk
Post by: zenelectro on September 27, 2013, 03:25:46 PM
Lately I have really needed a half decent valve based 1541 0 x OS DAC for development work on CD transports, zenclocks and I2S stuff etc. etc - and listening :)

Time is in short supply ATM so I bashed this beast together in a day flat from bits of an old DAC that was lying around. Just about done.
Board is one I did myself a few years ago.

Looks kind of sci fi / steam punkish I reckon. All good fun!

Looks good T.

Does this mean the long awaited Zenelectro USB->I2S interface isnt too far away?    ;D

Just to be clear - this is not intended as a KillerDAC beater, I doubt it will that good.

I have put it together mainly with bits I have on hand and added a few sprinkles of fairy dust.

I mainly want it to get the I2S reclocking / driver optimised and for future clock tweaks.

Yep, those two big oil caps definitely have the dual-engine thing going on!
The rectifier tube must be the energy source.

But the question is, can I get it to warp factor 9? :) :)

It might warp time and space
But can it play rhythm and pace?

Just about done, things are getting more serious now - why hold back :)

Separate supplies for everything including each heater.  Chip regulators ditched for discrete.
All electros on dac board ditched.
Ditched all receiver chip related stuff.

I think it might sound OK.

Should I change thread name to Enterprise?

Sure Scotty (Zen electro) I am sure you can give the Captain Warp factor nine as long as those caps hold!!! :o

You leave those regular non warp dacs wondering what the hell happened. Engineering and imagination its a wicked combination.

Enjoy the journey and the destination Zen...

Thanks, WRT L+S+W yep, hoping so.

Other bits will change, the OP stage has Black Gate NX on the HT - that's all I had lying around of
half decent quality.

Need some decent OP caps - Duelunds are thin on the ground around these parts.

Finished / tested +5-5-15 low noise discrete regs for DAC tonight, all good.

Should have music tomorrow.

Enterprise, Great name, go with it. The Killer Dac had the same origins, someone said its a killer Dac because it kills every other Dac.

This is the sound of the low level background noise - it's not 'hiss' as per most DAC's:

Yep - I know what your thinking, who would make a youtube clip of 24hrs of Enterprise engine noise!
And it's got over 1 million hits!

Only on the www :) :) :)

Well you see I live in a house full of 'trekkies'.

My kids are all Trek nerds - Star Trek / Dr Who....  I figure it's better than some of the trash on TV and
they'll probably have a good laugh about it when they get older.
