This transport rocked my world.   The legendary CDC TL1.

A fantastic partner to the Killer DAC,  if you can find one?

Great Transport. Is that your cd.

Yep, arrived this week.   I ordered a few more Hoffmans, and this one is the pick of the bunch !!

Quote from: kajak12
where did you order them from ?
i am a collector of brilliant recordings

Well Hoffman masters are brilliant in general, and they become very collectable when the initial (numbered) releases sell out.   The label he releases under is Audio Fidelity,  the cheapest place to get them from (that I am aware of) is cduniverse.

His approach to remastering is a minimalist one, often eschewing many common processing steps in order to present a true representation of the original master tapes. He attains this by avoiding compression, limiting, equalization and noise reduction.

it is indeed a very sexy transport.

for those that have it, how does it compare to the other legendary cd94?

That one is CEC though... But it'll give you some idea about the comparison.

Cheers,
William

hehehe.    I was running the stock CD960 for a couple of days,  I put the CDC back on, and fark me,  it's just brilliant in every way.  It's noticably better.    Note, both transports using the same coax connection (swapped the units over).

But,,,, who knows what the CD960 is capable of,  after I start hotting it up.

The IEC power socket arrived yesterday,  to install into the CD960.   I think some drilling might be required to make it fit.   kajak, can you give me some advise about drilling these CDP's,  what drill bits and is there anything to be cautious about?  (drill bits suddenly gripping  ??? ) -  ;D

drill small pilot holes first in the 4 corners, use a hacksaw blade to cut the metal to each corner.
DONT DRILL NEAR THE TRANSFORMER OR YOU RISK HITTING IT WITH THE DRILL BIT UNLESS YOU PROTECT THE TRANSFORMER.and yes speaking from experience i drilled through a tranformer and it cost me $100 to fix.
use quality drill bits

Hi ozmillsy,

What was Steve's transport we listened to at the ME24/LightSpeed comparison?

Did it start out as one of these?

regards

Pretty sure Steve has the CDC TL1. I remember being told he brought it over to ozmillys place that time :)

Yep, the same one.  What did you think on the night?  To be honest, at first it wasnt night/day to my ears.

But the more I listened to it, the more I started to appreciate what it does.  After extended listening I took it off and put the Oppo back on, and it was like grating teeth.

It's back here (on loan) atm, being used as a reference.  I've compared it to my Shanling (as a transport), my HTPC with Hiface, and to my new (stock) Philips CD960.

Hi ozmillsy,

I really liked it on the night. It was great just to kick back and listen to some music without having to think about AB or X. But what you are doing now is the best way to evaluate it IMO. There's more to a piece of equipment than being able to play a couple of selected tracks it has to be good on the majority of your CDs.

Personally, I couldn't go back to using CDs so I am willing to sacrifice a little quality for convenience. (I mustn't really be an audiophile). I imagine in a side-by-side test, Steve's CDC TL1 would knock my Transporter off.

regards.

Never heard a Transporter, but I hear good things about them.

Streaming music is very convenient.   I setup my PC for remote control from the iphone,   I just love being able to browse my cd collection via the iphone.   Great for parties too, to pass around the phone and let people pick stuff.

I have to agree that the convenience is brilliant. I have a htpc with movies/tv/bluray/music etc. One remote and it is just too easy.

I've got a few things planned for the pc so perhaps one day it will be comparable with a good transport :[. Not holding my breath though

Love streaming, I'm a little bit of a fan.  Ill never go back to the restriction of having to use individual disk media.

I still listen to cds all the time. Streaming just isnt quite there yet in terms of quality :[

I've spent a lot of time getting the htpc close to my current cdp, but still.

Just got my unit not so long ago. First things first is WOW, you can put your back out lifting this thing. Boxed it weighs a ton.

So I finally get it out of the box, and I find out that all of that weight is the just the player itself, it is built like a brick sh!t house.

It is the single most imposing piece of audio equipment I own.

Yeah,  it's cool huh.

Hens, be careful of that heavy puck.  I was warned by Steven that it is really easy to drop, and because it's so heavy,  it will damage the centre spindle if you drop it while in the process of putting it on the cd.

Good stuff hens.   Interested to see how it goes against your Esoteric.

Let me know when it is ready for battle with the marantz cd94 :)

It looks exactly like it does on the first page, except it has cec in the corner instead of cdc.

I'll take some photos when I can be bothered. I dont even have a point and shoot anymore.

Tuyen came around today and we made sure to test the CEC against the p700.

The verdict... Tuyen can't listen to the p700 anymore...

The CEC definately has a bit more resolution, its a bit more "liquid" and not as forward. Tuyen also thought that the p700 was a bit "boomy", I noticed it, but not the point where I thought it was bothersome.

Great transport!

I had the same experience.

The CDC Steven loaned me, totally buggered me.  Everything I previously thought and assumed about transports, went out the window.

CEC is great transport. The one Hens has been extensively modified (new clock with dedicated power supply, etc.).  Be really interested in being able to compare it to the modded cd94.

The difference between the esoteric and the CEC is like  CD50 to CD94..

who says transports don't make a difference :D
