Only 700 of the marantz cd7 made. real collectors item. If i had the cash to burn i would be all over this..

Nah I probably wouldn't get it for a few reasons.

a) It is a hell of a lot to pay for 2 double crowns, unseen and unheard
b) it would be a waste to pull them out of a piece of history like the cd7

as an aside too, who the hell would mod a cd7 :O. Its like redoing the interior yourself on a 50's ferrari

I compulsively bid on this without even thinking about it,  because they dont pop up very often, and the price is good.   :o

But I really dont *need* it,   I'm happy with hotting up the 960......

[looks around, scratches head] hmmm,  might try and pull the bid.   [shrugs]   ::)

I think everyone who's got CDM1 transport needs to have at least 1 extra player to use as spares, I'm looking for one too (any CD player with CDM1 mechanism will do, as suggested by Danny Digital) and waiting to snap up the cheaper one.

Well,  ebay wouldnt cancel the bid,  they referred me to the seller.   And of course the seller didnt cancel the bid.

So, I can buy it,  or let the ebay purchase go sour.  I dont like doing that.   So, I guess I'll pick it up.

It'll probably be listed in the FS section after I get it and make sure it works properly.....

Should be right mate.  I'm 50/50 on what I'll do.  Now that it's on the way,  I really should hang onto it  (assuming all is good with it).    The thing about running vintage players is, they can break.    So, having a spare CDM1 isnt a bad thing.

Besides,  I can also use it as a benchmark reference.   Stock CD94   vs  hot rodded 960.   Can we hear a difference?    ;D

Yep, fun fun to be had.  Now I just need a Wadia to complete the CDM1 collection.   8)

The 94 will be left stock for some time,  while I continue to go to town on the 960.     When the 960 is completely hot rodded, and feeding a Killer via I2S - then I'll consider if I do anything with the 94.

Yes,  I told that to myself the day after I returned the Killer.    After 2 weeks,,,,, it should have worn off by now.   8)

I should have told Steven that it wasnt coming back,  that's what everyone else does - isnt it?   ;)

A bit confused about the "(also broken)"?

"The unit is in very good technically and optically in good to excellent condition. It has just received the first new drive belt (new square belts).

The images are offered by the device.

Upon request, CD player (also broken) are taken in payment"

I should have mentioned it sooner.   This is the same seller (bertramb2) who I bought my CD960 from.     The player arrived very well packed, and in great condition.

Alas, a CD960 appears, and then disappears just as quickly.

I love my tricked up CD960,  it's not going to be replaced by the CD94.   The 94 is going under the bed, as a spare.

I do like the look of that Pete.  Top loader with no covers.   Not sure if that exposed look is best for performance though (wind pressure variations on the spinning disk, dust, etc.).  Although in saying that, 47Labs flat fish uses exposed top loading design and people say it is good!

I dont think it is legit.     It's from the same factory/year/month of manufacture Mario's S1 crown.    Take a look at Marios, and compare it to the chip in the ebay listing.....

Find a SB and use it as a transport.  It has a 3rd party jitter measurement of 80ps on the coax out.  Not many transports have a measurement that low.

Drizt, the blind testing thing has been done to death and on another thread, this thread is about transports.

The SB from what I have heard is a good product and it's great for background music, but with dedicated listening to 2 channel music the SB is IMO well below the standard of CD played through a decent transport (& dac).

The killerdac's I have heard are not faulty. Feel free to disagree when you have compared a SB to a CD transport through a killerdac.

Cheers, flemo.

haha, I was just about to post that.

BELOW FROM THE SELLER:
It has just been brought to my attention by that there is a very slight notch in the ejection gear.
I have since paid to have the unit checked out and fully serviced at a reputable audio repair company as a result.
This item has been fully serviced, lens cleaned, gears lubricated and i have opted to have belts replaced just for you!!!!, service documentation provided. i have been informed the CD ejection slide is not PERFECTLY smooth, but still fully ejects and plays perfectly, sounds great!. But this is very slight, and i have been assured by the service company that this does not affect the working order of the unit as it is so slight and that it is not necessary to having the ejections gear replaced. however this can be done at relatively low cost if you would like, you can do this
THEIR IS NO EJECTIONS GEAR IN THE CDM1 ITS ALL PULLEYS AND BELTS.

I know the highend Marantz & Philips CDP's are the desired transports, but as an owner of a CD50 I can vouch for their performance when modded and this one looks almost brand new.  For those unable, or not prepared to fork out the bigger bucks then this CD50 is IMO something worth considering as a dedicated transport. In some areas the CD50 does outperform the CD94, and price is one of them!!

Really cheap CDM1 transport.   The thing I like about this 1,  is there is a peep window in the top,  to see what cd is in the player without having to open the tray.

Who asked the question about the crown?   I hope this hasnt alerted other on lookers to this listing?    Is it genuine though, I assume it is,  but it looks dodgy.

I can use this as a spares unit,  so I'll have a crack at it.  I will onsell the CD94 if I get it.

I'm really liking the idea of the Studer A727, but not entirely sure if it's a wise move going against the more accepted Philips/Marantz choices, even though it uses the CDM1 and TDA1541A S1. Does anyone here have any direct experience with them, or compared one to a CD960 or CD94?

unfortunately the price for either player (a727 or a cd94) are not insignificant amounts - I woke up at 4am for the ending of the A727 I was watching but it went for $830 (plus another $250 postage), especially considering they are now ~25 year old CD players... also needing to go back to the disc swapping ritual, burning my large flac collection (~1.5tb of 100% log/accuraterip verified rips/albums) back to cd, etc. I think I need to think a lot more before dropping the large chunk of cash on one of these transports

I've briefly heard crazikid's wadia (albeit stock) in my system, I might see if I can arrange another listen of his player when he finishes the mods to see if going back to cd playback is the way to go forward, so to speak

Hi Osmilly  :)

The VDRS transport comes in so many flavours and some of them are just plain hype and plastic beneath covers.  My Esoteric is supposed to have an expensive version of this transport and upon close inspection does not appear to be anything to write home about. It's the marketing boys at play again having one good transport and then playing off the good reputation with the VRDS logo to peddle lower priced units increasing their bottom line.  :-\

Bit like early CD players in a way, they were built to a performace spec in the begining and then marketing and profit lines dictated cheaper and cheaper implememtations to maximise the bottom line.  All those plastic chassis for mass consumption behind a high tech faceplate, makes me shudder even thinking of them. :'(

Has anyone looked at the transport in that version?  Is it a good one?  Guess its SPDIF and optical output too, maybe even XLR.  It would be good to be able to add to the list of recommend transports for forum addicts and music lovers.

Spread the love of good music, its an integral part of life one which I cannot live without for too long.

Hi Mario :)
This player comes in at 33 according to Malcolm C over on hifi critic.  The Marantz cd7 scores 50 on the same scale, the Zanden is 105! Not so sure I'd be investing that kind of money just for a transport but they are amongst the best single box players ever built. (IMO-SNA)  From memory I don't think they made their own transports, certainly the electronics is all Accuphase and they were the first proponents of multiple processors (open to correction here) ; an almost peerless approach to design and implementation, a friend with trained ears reckons its one of the best players in conjunction with the DAC he has ever heard, a high recommendation in my personal book.  Lets get Tuyen to buy it and lend it to us all  ;) hey you've got to laugh Tuyen, you go through more gear than I change my underwear, ooops too much information ha ha.  It's all fun as long as you treat it in the right manner.

The 507 esd was also known as the 227 esd . Would have thought it used the standard Philips clock freq.

I chucked a bid in for it this morning as well, but it jumped passed my price whilst I was typing it in.

My price was well and truly blown out of the water by the end price.

I would imagine that there are very few around in the condition that this one appeared to be.

Thanks for the lead.

It was only because of its stated condition and the fact that it has been sitting at a low price, that I decided to have a go at it.  I was anticipating that the price would crank up in the last few minutes (as it did).

A properly implemented USB IP DAC is a better option these days.

These esoteric transports are expensive boat anchors IMO.

Let's get serious about transport:
Audio Note's most expensive transport and DAC, check http://www.audiofederation.com/blog/archives/805

If there's a hope to commercial hifi, then the AN maybe is...now who's gonna get one and compare to our CD94 and KDAC?  :D

Next year we may be able to listen to this AN front end at Sydney's hifi show? Hopefully...

Cheers,
William

I must admit,  I do have a 'thing' for the 80's style champagne chassis Marantz were producing.

Have you ever converted a '94 from 120/60 to 240/50 ?

You could get a transformer made or just take it from your current transport easy to do.
