May I attribute a simple Sanyo Laser with a JVC chip combo... :-X
Cheap...yes.....but the SYNERGIE is nearly unbeatable...
The mechanism just a toploader with a flimsy spindle a magnetic puck and a mabuchi motor...and a 10 dollar plastic lens
Do not ask me why Wadia owners are confused...
Here a picture of my "PiTbull" Transport Project implementing the 50 dollar stuff mentioned above...
I know it is up to the DIY how far you want to take it....believe me ....sky is the limit here... ;D

Just got myself a PlayStation 1 SCPH-1002, from youpay. Played a CD to make sure it worked, and it did. Sounded good straight out of the box, so now the mods begin. I know i am prob 10 years to late.

I know it is not as good as the CDM1, but was curious...

;D CDM1 was built to spec by a German manufacturer for Phillips I beleive. Everything that followed was built to a price - go figure. So nice cast ali replaced with cheap plastic, laser diodes burn out and horrible cheap connectors and pcb's. CDM2 is not as robust as earlier model but still reasonable. The CDM4 was used by a lot of smaller specialist manufacturers and tolled the last of the swinging arm mechs from memory.
I cry when I look at all the cheaper derivitives of the original CDM1 but that's economics for you. Modern DVD players use junk in comparison but they want you to buy a new one every two years or so meaning built in obsclesence and short wear out times. There are lots of other 'philips derivitives' but most are frail and not too hot, my Cambrige Audio transports and Micormega units use later cheap units which are unrelieable and caused a lot of returns for both companies. Stick to the real laser transport the CDM1 unless you can afford a Pi tracer. All IMV of course.
