Rebuilding an Audio Note 300B SET amp
« on: October 19, 2010, 09:55:04 PM »
This thread will be a slow one, so please be patient!

It's purpose is to document from start to finish my rebuild (possibly sporting a 'new' simpler circuit) of my old rusty AudioNote 300B SET kit amp.

Some photos to give you guys an idea.

Photo of the chassis I will probably reuse. I will reuse the all transformers.  I hope the Electraprint output transformers fit on the chassis. They are monsters!

Photo showing the model of the ElectraPrint OPT. These are meant to be pretty decent OPT for the 300B according to the VACUUM TUBE VALLEY's SE TRANSFORMER TEST (http://www.meta-gizmo.net/tri/vtv-se.html). They compare a whole range of OPT with a 300B SET amp. Good read!

Current innards of the amp. Few bits and pieces I can reuse.  The TKD 100K volume pot, few ELNA caps (metalic blue ones on the side), 2x 0.33uf Hovland musicaps, couple of Dearborn Glass caps,  47+47uf Blackgate Heart of Muse cap and few other blackgates and resistors.

Bunch of oil fill caps (most are GE 22.5uf). Oil fills are meant to work well but not sure how to fit them in the chassis...

Still deciding/unsure which circuit I will use though..

Is that the amp u asked me to get back from Mario's place long time ago?

Is it working? When I got it the unit feels like it's disintegrating right in front of me... :p

More pics!!!

I think Tuyen has actually already surpassed Mario in terms of pure madness.

That's the amp treblid :)  True it wasn't in such a good state when I first got it.

Well I have ripped out every component on the chassis.  Gave it a clean and is looking very fresh.

Will upload a photo of the chassis and all the possibley reuseable parts tonight.

The 3 piece audio note 300B kit pcbs are not needed anymore. Would they be of use to anyone?

Mario,

I know of a 34AB that is due to be modded.

It would save you having to buy one ;D ;D

And the problem with that is? ;D

Seriously, hopefully you decide to get and mod one.  I can then get the advantage of your experiences.

hey trebby

The 45 is a code for another direct heated triode type tube (like the commonly known 300B or 2A3 tube).

SET = Single Ended Triode type circuit design.  Using 1 tube (whether it is a 300b, 2a3, 45, etc) per channel.

the 45 outputs the least amount of power (~1.75-2watts) compared to the 300b (~8watts), 2a3 (~3.5watts).  But it is meant to be the 'best' sounding common tube out there. Of course this is very subjective and also depends on the rest of the componentry (ie. output transformers, power trans, caps, resistors etc)  but I thought I'll just give it a go and see what all the 45 SET raving is about :)

Smart idea. 45s are great sounding amps and you can use great tubes in them. 2A3 monoplates 245 globes ect.

That looks bloody good for the price, wonder how it sounds?   8)

Would have been good to see pic's of what's under the hood, and I would have thought an IEC socket would be a better option instead of standard power cord?
