The cd-r's effect the sound, for sure.  I dont know why, but they do.

Hi ozmillsy,

Can't you rip the files from the CDs and compare?

If the files are identical to the original source then the CDs are OK to use.

If I suspected the bits to be different, I could do that.    But this is not my suspicion at all.

I believe the differences in sound are due to the way the laser is reading the discs on playback (different levels of jitter for different types of disc),  and/or,  the way the bits are being written and stored onto the disc surface (which effects the laser on playback, resulting in different levels of jitter).

I have no proof of this.   But I'll bet pounds to peanuts,  that the differences have nothing at all to do with the accuracy of the actual 0's or 1's.

Looking at that diagram on the unit I think you are right Oz. Internal.
am I correct that this is the only Plextor with the same chip as the F1?

Maybe we could make an offer on two or three of them??
I know nothing of the Plextors, and have no idea if it is the right model with the right chip.     Kajak, would you know? (is it the same as yours?)

If it's the right type, I'll go in on a purchase.     Provided I can grab it off you, next time we catch up.   I dont want to pay additional postage within Aust.

Brad, sounds like the laser on your Marantz 44 is on the way out. I think the plextor may be the way to go. The Yamaha FI, do come up for sale, look on ebay every few days.
After some quick Googling Stephen I think you may be right, the lasers might be on the way out.... :o

Brad, if you need me a new laser this one could be good: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MARANTZ-CD45-COLLECTABLE-CLASSIC-VINTAGE-CD-PLAYER-CAN-POST-/171241006648

It looks mint, I can pick it up for you if you decide to go ahead.

Cheers,
William

It's cheap enough and certainly worth grabbing William

But should note these comments on the listing,,,,

All lights and contols are working and the only issue being that it is a bit temperamental about playing / reading certain discs.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious flaw Andrew. Sorry Brad, I missed it, must be because of my tired eyes...

I still think its worth grabbing, at that price, as a spare mechanism.

They can run for years like that.

Sorry guys haven't reported back...........

I check the marantz/phillips players for sale every few days or so, but not looking for a spare laser just yet, I'm not sold atm that my lasers are in trouble. I'll look into a good burner first. I keep wanting to grab these older 1540 players cause they go for good prices, but I have two already + a cd94 ???

Started to mod the cd44 and it's sounding better in my second system.

BTW a nice CD73 just sold on ebay. Was tempted to grab it just for eye candy wow what a looker, but need to fund other things right now......

OK I found a NOS Plextor Premium 2 in Australia.

Burnt a CD and my older Marantz plays it no problem, and it sounds great.

It's an internal unit so if ribbon connection becomes obsolete i'm in for some problems, if the burner does not die before hand.

So many more things to try now just with the burner alone........while I'm waiting to try other things out like cables etc. etc. etc. etc............this is nuts............... ???
