I heard these in an all battery powered (5842/WE 417A only) valve amplifier putting out about half a watt, the amp sounded very good indeed, it had a smooth grainless purity, But any valve that puts out a lot of power from a small plate area can be a problem. I have  some new in box Amperex and Western electric etc  5842 /417A  valves if needed, they are easy to get off the net. Apparently they make very good driver valves.

Hi Steve, I am going to use the 5842 or 417A in a Woo Audio WA7.  See the link http://www.head-fi.org/t/649097/woo-hoooo-wa7-fireflies/240   I am using Audeze LCD-3 headphones.  I hear on the net, the Amperex 4852 d getter tubes from the 1960s are better than the WE 417A, but unless you have a pair of each to try, I could be choosing the wrong brand.  The joys of NOS tubes.
