Getting started with first mod.
« on: September 02, 2011, 08:26:52 PM »
I'm yet to meet flemo and kajak but they have very kindly invited me round to listen to their systems, with my speakers at flemos which I think is great. I should probably wait till I talk to these guys and ask their opinions, but what does everyone else think about burson and their products, and would this be a good first move into DIY. My cdp is a creek evo, and I was thinking about the clock and opamp upgrade. Any responses would be much appreciated.
Cheers Dave.

Your first post and your ready for diy i love your style dave ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
regarding the clock burson no need for burson just make a clock like i have http://killerdac.com/forum/index.php?topic=5.0 i have some boards at home and parts to make it all we need is your cd player frequency order a crystal of ebay and your away.
regarding opamps i have heard that burson opamps are very good mind you i have never tried them myself as i use all valve gear.
When you listen to flemo's system or my system we will get to know what your after in sound that way it will be easier to guide you in the right direction.

I have tried Burson Opamps myself.. But TBH I'm still a noob so no idea how good/bad they really are.... :( (So don't listen to me :p)...

They are a tad overpriced though...

Hey kajak could you explain why your opamp mod would soundbetter than the burson. Forgive me for being a bit hesitant but I'm still trying to get my head round the DIY side of things.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,

Which model Creek cdp do you own?

Burson is a tad overpriced as treblid has posted. Something like this dual HDAM discrete opamp from Gigawork would be just as high quality and for much less..

I've also got a Burson clock that you are most welcome to try too.    Will need to solder back on the 3x 100uf elna silmics and find the 33mhz oscillator chip before it'll work though :)

Interesting handle.  ;D
Creek CD player - you have taste sir. ;)
What Opamps are currently fitted?  ::)
How many are there and what position in the circuit are they beig used? (image of circuit board at reasonable res would help).

Burson replacements for the run of the mill opamps are indeed a great replacement, they are well constructed and supported.  An alternative is to be found at the audioguild website, you will find they have available 3 different  descrete opamp replacements, they tag these earth moon and sun which is supposed to describe the sound, they are better priced inc postage and I have tried these and they are indeed good ;)

You'll find that replacing the output caps can make a huge difference too and I would point you to the excellent POOGE articles from the US audio mags.

With a specialist manufacturer like Creek the player would have been 'voiced' so you need to understand that you can upset the balance easily.  The usual suspects such as AD845's OPA 41's  and many others are available for their 'sound', each of the descrete offerings transcend these by a fair margin IMV but you'll need to tune the circuit around them by looking at the power supply decouplers and voltage regs.  There is a huge swathe of information surrounding opamp replacements which a simple google search will unearth.  If the PCb has socketed opamps then its very easy to change them, if however they are soldered and the PCB is a multi sandwiched afari then its a different matter all together and novices should stear well clear as you'll end up overheating the pcb and lift tracks, if you don't know what this is - be warned you could end up with a very dead CD payer.

Burson have a good how to video on their site which is worth a look.

What's the rest of the system?

We all like different things so lets all agree to disagree and if any common ground is found then worship it.  Mine is the KD hence being present on this forum.

My clock is not a opamp module simply just a clock which costs less then burson and less complicated easier to tune to ones system. ;)

I would leave the Creek alone and maybe look at buying a dac kit off the web , this will give you some basic diy experience ( if you don't already have it) and maintain the resale value of the Creek for when you buy a CD94  to use as a transport :D
Here is a good basic dac kit : http://www.ebay.com/itm/DAC-TDA1541A-WM8805-NOS-1-0UI-multi-input-/220840940110?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336b25524e
and heres a valve output stage to match : http://www.ebay.com/itm/DAC-I-V-conversion-module-SRPP-tube-module-/320749484087?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aae28b837
By the time you have added the cost of transformers to the above you will still be under $300 and will have a good base for future upgrades.
Listening with my ears :)

The rest of my system is Tannoy standmounts, Cambridge 650a, musical fidelity tube buffer, Jas power board, mainly Xlo cables with a cawsey and Zion power cables also. Ozcal I think that is a really good idea and probably the smartest choice, as I am a complete novice, I could get a few skills up on this and also an old onkyo receiver that has stopped working. Thanks for the replys guys, I will ask for some more advice when I get stuck and need some help. Thanks again.
Dave.

Thanks for the offer tuyen, the more that I read the more that I realize that I'm probably out of my depth on here. I may just sit back for a bit, read and learn some more, catch up with flemo and kajak, and decide if DIY route is for me.
Cheers Dave.
