SONY CDP 502ES
« on: February 03, 2012, 07:42:26 PM »
Hi guy's picked up one of these beautifully built cdp's yesterday.
Needs a couple of new belts for the drawer mechanism but otherwise plays fine.
This players pre-dates digital output but I believe it is possible to derive the spidf signal form one of the chips inside.
Does anyone have any experience of adding coax output to this player?
It uses the following digital filter : http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheets2/48/485878_1.pdf
Cheers,
Gordon

Looks like it may be possible to get both spidf and I2S out from this player.
Had a listen to it without any mods yesterday and it sound surprisingly good , very musical and track access is about the fastest I have seen.
Anyone compared one of these to the CD94 etc?

Sorry Oz, have not played with this particular Sony.  It resembles the CD94 and CD960 from Marantz and Phillips in basic form quite closely.  Looks like no one else has any experiance either.  What chip set does it emply for the D to A?

It certainly looks well made compared to a lot of the plastic fantastics with a drive mech which resembles some of the earlier Philips mech's.  Best of luck.

Hi V , yep it does look a bit like the Marantz's internally but the laser transport uses linear motors  and all the chips are Sony : CX23034 , 35 etc..

Yes I like the use of copper and the shielding, it looks more built to work than built down to a price. ;D ;D

I had this player too, robust made, snap disc reading.
After check schematic,
CDP 502 ES from cx 23034 ( digital filter ) go to SONY DAC cx20152.
With similar model maybe 502 or 552 esd, For transmit to spdif, it's need ic cxd1075P, digital interface format converter.

The similar model but with BB DAC pcm53, after digital filter, there is other ic cxd 1058Q, serial to parallel converter, before pcm53.
I m interest to this modification but i/m not EE back ground.
just my 2 cents.
