R2R repairers
« on: October 31, 2012, 12:48:45 PM »
Thought i'd start a thread to capture the details of the various technicians around the country who are experienced in repairing and refurbing these old R2R machines.

Has anyone dealt with Zoran from ZM Electronics in Thornbury?    I've been advised that Zoran is 1 of the best, was an ex employee of Tascam (I think).

I spoke with Zoran today.   He confirmed to me that he doesn't typically do full re-furbs on the players he sells, to the extent where he proactively goes in and replaces caps, etc.

He fixes whatever is necessary, to ensure it is in good working order.   He measures wow/flutter and other things, to ensure it is operating within spec,  and he'll replace the parts that are required to be replaced to return a unit to operating spec.

I've picked up that PR99 off EBay. Zoran sold that unit to the EBay lister about 6 months ago.  So I rang him, to discuss what he recalled about it.

Zoran assured me that the units he sells are in very good working order.  [shrugs].   So this one he has for sale at $800 is likely to be good, I think??

Word on the street for a Sydney Tape deck repairer/refurbisher:

Elson Silva

[yes, the same Elson we know re Amps, to be confirmed whether he still does work on old tape decks (might be too busy doing other stuff??) ]

It's all about the music,, not the equipment.

Elson makes some very good valve amps so he clearly has a good set of ears, you'd be right with him I feel if indeed he does entertain R2R refurbishments / repairs / alignment, failing that we have an expert right here in Perth.

We all like different things so lets all agree to disagree and if any common ground is found then worship it.  Mine is the KD hence being present on this forum.

Elson is in Sydney, and he was a tape guru before the amps, aren't we lucky.

This came in for repair / upgrade today. It's not a R2R but kind funky anyway.

Original Tape Echo as used by Shadows (H Marvin), a  Meazzi unit.
All the different heads give delay time / sound on sound options.

Apparently they are fairly sought after.

The guy that owns this one has used / owned quite a few different makes (MCI / studer / 3M etc) and vouches for the sound.

Downside is small reels.

You've got a great machine. Just do the replay electronics path and you're set.

Some 'dirty pics' of the Nagra IV insides. :)

I have to say, layout and engineering wise this thing is a work of art. You can see where the Swiss get their reputation from.

Part of this repair was mechanical. The collar I'm holding with my worse for wear (gtr/machine shop) fingers had to have a 1.0mm
pin drilled / pressed into it then flattened to about 0.70 mm A.F. with a diamond file.
