Marantz CD-99DR
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:59:33 PM »
Just picked up this recently and can't find much info about it. I assume it is a transport only version of a CD-94. No analouge section.

Anyone know much about these?

They look pretty good. There were a few models 99DR, 99SE and they look very well built.

I have no idea what the clock frequency is on them, couldn't find schem / serv manual.

Yes two versions available - nice find, check out the vintage knob web site, they list there the details.

Yup CD94 every time and I own both. Ultimately it's worth more so a better investment all round.  The favorite track selector on the 960 can be handy though for weeding out those less desirable tracks.  There are many upgrades that can be performed on either of these old machines and its easy to burn though 1K on quality parts and tweaks.  Dont forget Zenelectros clock board  :D as this will take it to places very few players can even hint at and bring a naturalness  and organic richness and pace that is very rear indeed.  8)

I would also advise anyone contemplating such upgrades to hear a good SD card reader before parting with serious cash as they are err hmm,  :o a significant step in the right direction with parts that do not wear out and are not almost unobtanium!  Dear me that's almost blasphemy on this forum  :P but IMV a good modern alternative which will also respond to tweaking, power supplies etc.

Mr V

I have a QA550 here somewhere and from memory it has an I2S OP and it runs off an 11.2896 clock.

I had forgotten about that thing but it could be made very very good with a clock / I2S OP board.

Too much stuff on ATM. New clocks are just about done and look really nice, layout even better this time.

cheers

Zens clock with i2s is going in for sure as well as IEC connector install/fuse bypass etc. Any other mods he deems worthy. Craig has kindly offered to send some Oscan caps for the digital board - Thanks Craig/Mario, let me know the cost.

Any other mods I should do?

At the moment I am leaning toward the CD960 to apply the mods however the cd94 would look a lot better in my rack! The CD99DR would be good to keep in original form considering they are quite rare, perhaps even more hartd to find then cd94.

Before you bypass fuse let me know what rating they are.

I had to source some super high surge rating fuses for medical applications, I think
they may be very good for this.

Sounds good Terry.

Any other mods to do?  ::)
Well forget the fuse and replace it with a resettable mini circuit breaker of the same current rating- much better and can act as a power switch too.  Look at the voltage regs, sad 3 legged variety, try Teddy Regs - much better all round. The more you install the tighter clearer sound you get. Oscons and poly props, chokes, RF filtering, damping with lead to tune the CDM1 mech better (springs too firm to be effective), remove laser lens and clean thoroughly followed by a good polish.  Chassis add mass with thick copper plate beneath and use 'still points' or similar below, remove mains transformer from PCB and install in exterior box or better still replace unit with a vintage higher VA plate and frame (say 100VA or better, the original ones have multiple taps so you may have to fit more than one transformer unless specialist wound - Steve G knows the bloke to do this) the distance between the transformer and rectifiers determines how high the distortion goes so keep leads short.  The transformer secondary’s can be tuned too.  Local decoupling caps, pick a flavour you like and use throughout.  Green the drawer and install some green LED's in the drive bay, matt out the reflective parts of the transport.  Fit new drive mech belts. Disable the analogue output section. and the best til last, install a Zen clock and feed the DAC with I2s via a decently short high quality cable, preferably screened -  now you have a decent front end.  Dead easy to blow a grand doing all this but it will reward you with a fine musical result.

You can look up the pooge series of articles from the Audio Amateur magazine as they went to town on a similar machine so lots of good advice there.
Enjoy ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It will take a me a fair while to get my head around that lot vitavoxdude!

In the mean time I will ask Terry to fit the clock and convert to IEC connector with the hope of implementing those mods in the future.

Cheers for the heads up!  ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D

It weighs in heavier than the CD-94, probably due to the cast iron cheeks!
